July 2018 - Star of the Month - Jeannie Thompson

Getting ready to celebrate ten years of tenure with Austin Bank, this month’s Star is a beloved asset of the Smith County Region.  Her professionalism and respect for those she comes in contact with – employees and customers alike – are traits to be admired and emulated.  Please join us in congratulating Jeannie Thompson, Teller in Whitehouse, on her selection as our July Star of the Month.

Jeannie’s work history includes many roles in customer service and three years of banking prior to joining Austin Bank in 2008.  She is a fixture in the Whitehouse office, always the first to greet customers with a welcoming smile as soon as they walk in the door.  Customers miss her when she is gone.  With her experience and willingness to fill a role when needed, Jeannie serves as the Teller Trainer for all new Tellers hired in Smith County.  When new equipment was placed in various Austin Bank offices, Jeannie was required to learn the new technology despite not using them on a daily basis.  Now when training Tellers who will be working under the new protocol she travels to Tyler Med Center to do so, training new employees to work with all versions of technology available in their office.  “Many times we have tried to get her to stay with us,” shares Margaret Mullinnix, AVP/Assistant Retail Market Manager at Tyler Med Center.  “But, she always returns to Whitehouse, so we look forward to when she returns to train.”

Embodying the definition of a team player, Jeannie never hesitates to help.  Many examples can be noted here, however, most recently she returned early from vacation after a coworker experienced an unexpected accident.  Rather than leave the office shorthanded, Jeannie returned to ease the burden on her coworkers.  She has been described by coworkers as Ethel to their Lucy – you can always count on having a good time and getting things done when Jeannie is around.

Originally from Illinois, Jeannie and her husband, Norm, now reside in Whitehouse.  They have one daughter, Misty.

“Jeannie is a wonderful example of being a team player.  She is willing to volunteer her time and talents to make our bank, and our community, better.  Her experience in banking and her knowledge of our community are great benefits to the Whitehouse office.”

Kara Fulmer, Retail Office Manager, Whitehouse

“Jeannie does an exceptional job of greeting customers as they walk in the door, even if she has a customer in her window.  It always amazes me how she can remember them and call them by name.”

Maria Davenport, SVP/Retail Market Manager, Whitehouse

“I have been fortunate to have Jeannie work in the Med Center office as she trains new Tellers.  She is not afraid to learn new things, and her patience in answering the same questions over and over again astounds me.”

Margaret Mullinnix, AVP/Assistant Retail Market Manager, Tyler Med Center

Joining the Austin Bank team in 2007, Sue brought with her 17 years of previous bank management experience.  Providing the best customer experience is always her goal, and she does what is required to make that happen.  “Sue is committed to the success of Austin Bank and her employees,” shares Anita Snider, VP/Human Resources Development, Jacksonville.  “Recently, our Marshall office was very shorthanded and Sue took it upon herself to pitch in and share her time between the Big Sandy and Marshall offices.  She truly is a team player.”  Other employees have shared that Sue is quick to respond to questions, always courteous, and has a smile in her voice when speaking on the phone.

Sue resides in Holly Lake Ranch with her two dogs, Oreo and Cocoa.  She has a twin sister, Lou, and enjoys spending her time shopping with her sister in addition to singing, dancing and cooking.  A fun fact about Sue, she has visited every state in the United States with the exception of Maine.  And, she has lived in New York, Mississippi, Arizona, Alaska, Tennessee and now Texas.

An active part of her community, Sue works with several organizations and is a member of the local Rotary Club and Big Sandy Chamber of Commerce.  She is a member at Summit Heights Church in Holly Lake.

Gay Higdon, SVP/Retail Market Manager, Longview Oak Forest

“Sue is always willing to help someone out if they need it.  She cares about doing a great job.”

Melody Payne, Teller Operations Supervisor, Big Sandy

September 2018 - Star of the Month - Brenda McMichael

The list of characteristics required by an Austin Bank Star is quite lengthy including traits such as high standards of ethics and morals; positive attitude; pride in their job; teamwork; dedication and modeling the Austin Bank core values.  This month’s Star has consistently demonstrated these qualities over the last 17 years in her commitment to serving the customers and employees of Austin Bank.  Please join us in congratulating Brenda McMichael, Customer Service Representative in Frankston, on her selection as Star of the Month for September.

Brenda joined the Austin Bank family in 2001, working for First State Bank Frankston in the Credit Department and then later in Bookkeeping.  When the banks merged in 2010, Brenda began working as a Customer Service Representative and was the switchboard operator for Frankston until recently when calls were routed through the Customer Care Center.  Since the change in her responsibilities, Brenda has been proactive in finding new ways to fill her time.  She works alongside her teammates, learning their job functions in order to be able to help in times of need.  One new skill is scanning Teller work.  “Brenda has always been a team player, and she is willing to help anyone in any way that she can,” shares Misty Evans, SVP/Retail Market Manager for the Cherokee Region.  She recounts a time when a neighboring office was very short-handed and having difficulty getting their work scanned in a timely manner.  Brenda happily volunteered to travel and help that office out.  She was such a big help that the ROM in the office requested her help again the following week.

That spirit of service also extends to the customers Brenda comes in contact with daily.  Always with a smile on her face, she greets each customer genuinely.  Her knowledge of the bookkeeping and credit departments gives her an edge when answering customer questions allowing her to go the extra mile to help.  Eager to serve even with non-banking problems, Brenda recently assisted a customer who had locked the keys in their vehicle.  First offering the use of her roadside assistance benefits, Brenda then drove the customer to their home a short distance away to retrieve an extra key.

A long-time member of the Frankston community, Brenda resides in Cove Springs and has a son and daughter-in-law; three granddaughters and three great granddaughters.  She enjoys making jewelry, going to the beach and spending time with family.   Brenda has a twin sister, Linda Hefelfinger, who also works in the Frankston office.  More than once Brenda has had a hard time convincing someone that they did not talk to her the last time they were in, but to her sister.

“Brenda demonstrates professionalism and dedication in everything she does.  Serving each customer with a smile, she is an exceptional employee and an excellent team player.”

Minerva Trujillo, Retail Office Manager, Frankston

“Brenda is the face of Austin Bank in Frankston.  Sitting at the halo, she is the first to greet customers when they enter the Bank.  An asset to Austin Bank, I am fortunate to call Brenda a coworker and friend.”

Misty Evans, SVP/Retail Market Manager, Cherokee Region

“Brenda exhibits true teamwork and customer service in all she does.  She consistently strives to provide WOW service for coworkers and customers alike.”

Lisa McCoy, SVP/eBanking Manager, Jacksonville

Our December Star is a more recent addition to the Austin Bank team.  Joining us in August of 2017, she has quickly embraced the core values of the Bank and demonstrates them daily in her interactions with customer and fellow employees.  Next time you are in Palestine, please stop by and wish Jenny Killian, Retail Office Manager, congratulations on her selection as Star of the Month.

Jenny joined the Bank as a Customer Service Representative in the Palestine office, coming from eight years with Regions Bank in the Houston area.  Putting her administrative and bank management experience to use, she quickly moved to assume the role of Retail Office Manager in May of this year.  In that time, she has earned the respect and trust of customers as she takes great pride in helping them through myriad of situations.  One might say that she goes ‘above and beyond’, but Jenny considers it a normal part of her job.  Within the last few months she has received two commendations via the ‘Email the Chairman’ function on our website.  These individuals took the time to notify management of the excellent service they experienced.  In one instance, Jenny’s attention to detail prevented a loss as a result of a fraudulent incoming wire following his email account being hacked.  The victim in this situation, a non-customer in Idaho, stood to lose a great deal of his savings had it not been for Jenny’s actions.  In the other, Jenny traveled to a local nursing home to assist with the closing of an account for an elderly customer.  Her thoughtfulness and willingness to help was much appreciated by family members farther away.  Both people expressed great praise for Jenny and the way she represented Austin Bank, saying that she ‘made a difference they would not forget.’

A resident of Grapeland, Jenny enjoys a wide range of hobbies including antiquing, fishing and spending time with family and friends.  She has one pet – Harley Jo – an eight year old schnauzer.  She holds an Associate of Arts in Business from Lone Star College.

“Jenny has been great to work with since she joined us in Palestine.  She is organized and gets things done with a warm and friendly attitude.  She has great ideas to grow the bank in Palestine and we are excited that she is here.”

Brad Anderson, VP/Location President, Palestine

“Jenny does an excellent job, going above and beyond to help customers, non-customers and coworkers on a daily basis.  Her humility and work ethic make her very deserving of this honor.”

Misty Evans, SVP/Retail Market Manager, Frankston

“From day one, Jenny was impressive.  Her determination to be the best was exactly what the team in Palestine needed.  She is a fun, down-to-earth individual who wants to work hard and get the job done.”

Darrell Thompson, Retail Office Manager, Troup

This month’s Star is an individual with a track record of having the internal drive and motivation to begin and continue tasks without external prodding or extra incentives.  This ‘self-motivation’ results in a high level of work output, success and leadership.  We are excited to recognize Nancy Guzman, HR Generalist in Jacksonville, as the Star of the Month for February.

“Nancy has been a tremendous asset to the Human Resources department,” shares Lynn Littlejohn, EVP/HR Director.  “She is very self-motivated and takes advantage of available software training to learn new features and solve problems.”  Nancy is willing to step in and assume additional duties when positions are vacated or team members need help.  She is a problem-solver and continuous learner setting an example for those who are around her.  Since joining the Bank in 2015, Nancy has implemented new software programs, updated the HR intranet site, helped develop new policies and served as liaison with office management to communicate and provide training.  In addition, she also serves as the point person for the group health benefit plan and works with the insurance providers and employees to create the smoothest experience possible from the moment of enrollment.

Described as kind-hearted, soft-spoken and upbeat, Nancy maintains her high level of service to others outside of the Bank as well.  She and her husband, Hector, live in Jacksonville with their five children.  A member of Primera Iglesia Bautista, she assists church members with filing paperwork for U.S. citizenship, serves as VBS Director and was the church secretary for several years.  She has a daughter who is a member of the Jacksonville High School Cherokee Charmers and Nancy serves on the Booster Club board.  She enjoys spending time with her family and working in her garden.  Nancy loves flowers and you can often find fresh flowers on her desk.

“Nancy is every supervisor’s dream employee – highly motivated, smart, friendly and always possessing a positive attitude.  She has helped to modernize our Human Resources information systems allowing our department to be more efficient.  I can’t image our team without her.”

Lynn Littlejohn, EVP/Human Resources Team, Jacksonville

“Nancy is a joy to work with.  Very knowledgeable in the HR field, she strives for excellence in every task or project assigned.  We are privileged to have her on our Austin Bank team and I see her being an asset for many years to come.”

Pam Pate, SVP/Human Resources Team, Jacksonville

“Nancy is a great coworker and also a great friend.  She has a strong commitment to her God, family and her Austin Bank family.  It is a privilege to work with her.”

One quality held by our Austin Bank Stars is that of a commitment to teamwork.  While all employees are expected to be team players, those chosen as Stars tend to perform above and beyond the minimum expectations.  This month’s Star is honored for her excellent communication skills, listening abilities, reliability and respectfulness as she works seamlessly with those in her location as well as those outside of it.  Congratulations to Melany Perez, Loan Assistant, on her selection as our March 2019 Star of the Month.

Melany joined the Austin Bank team in 2013 as a Teller in the Tyler Med Center location.  In 2014 she moved to her current role as a Loan Assistant in the Tyler Cumberland Park office.  In this time, she has earned a reputation as friendly, knowledgeable, approachable and professional.  She serves as a trainer for new loan assistants and mentor to new employees, often having two at a time.  Patient and willing to answer the same questions again and again, Melany never lets her own duties fall to the wayside while she helps others.  Her dedication to success was exhibited recently during a time of transition within the office.  She was hands on in trying to help her coworkers however possible, even calling to request guidance on duties outside her normal scope of work.  And, she goes out of her way to help employees from other locations when customers need assistance in Tyler instead of their normal banking office.  “Melany is an amazing trainer, mentor, coworker and loyal friend.  She motives me, and everyone around her, to be a more professional and dedicated employee that provides the exceptional service Austin Bank thrives on,” shares Amanda Gill, Loan Assistant, Tyler Cumberland Park.

A graduate of Whitehouse High School, Melany has worked while continuing her education and now holds an Associates in Accounting from Tyler Junior College and a Bachelors in Business Management from the University of Texas at Tyler.  Fiercely loyal to her family, her friends and her church, seldom a weekend goes by that she does not have a family gathering to attend or a friend to see.  An active member of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, her volunteer work with the organization is extremely important.   For fun, Melany enjoys playing volleyball and participates in several leagues through the Glass Recreation Center in addition to playing sand volleyball with her family.

“There are so many good things I want everyone to know about Melany.  Not to sound cliché, but Melany is the epitome of ‘calm within a storm’.  She keeps her cool when things are in absolute chaos, never losing her temper nor her kindness.”

Gay Smith, SVP/Relationship Manager, Tyler Cumberland Park

“Melany is the model teammate and is a joy to work with.  She leads by example, embodying the ‘wow factor’ that separates Austin Bank from other banking institutions.  It is easy for one to see the dedication Melany has to serving Austin Bank’s customers.”

Blake Laird, VP/Relationship Manager, Tyler Cumberland Park

“Melany is a great asset for the Bank.  She takes great pride in her work and is completely dedicated to her customers.  Melany is always willing to take that extra step to provide outstanding customer service.”

Jeff King, SVP/Regional President, Tyler Cumberland Park

On the list of qualifications for an Austin Bank Star are these words – dedicated, loyal and committed.  As stated in his nomination, if these are the qualities of a Star, then this employee is a “Star on steroids.”  We are excited to announce that Keith Fletcher, SVP/Security and Facilities Manager has been selected as the June Star of the Month.

Ask any boss about hard working, key employees who drive their business forward and one of the words they will invariably use to describe them is dedicated.  On fire, purpose driven, dedicated employees are often the first to show up and the last to leave work – sometimes having to be reminded to quit working and go home.  These words describe Keith to a T.  His dedication to Austin Bank is beyond reproach as he spends countless hours to ensure our facilities are top notch; our building projects are timely and up to Austin Bank standards; and as he keeps the security of the Bank and its employees a priority.  Once committed to a project, Keith will work around the clock, including nights and weekends, to make sure it is completed.  On many occasions, employees have left work on Friday evenings and returned Monday morning to a complete makeover of their office or department.  “Neither rain, nor sleet, nor dark of night keeps Keith from his work at the Bank!” shares Lynn Littlejohn, EVP/Human Resources Team, Jacksonville.  “His work ethic is above anyone I know and when he is assigned a job it is always completed in a top notch manner.  I can’t think of a more dedicated or deserving employee to receive this award.”

Keith joined Austin Bank in 2003 following a 20 year career with the Marshall Police Department.  During his tenure he worked as a Patrol Officer and rose through the ranks to Assistant Chief of Police and Administrative Captain.  Honored numerous times for his work in law enforcement, Keith was named Officer of the Year by the East Texas Peace Officers Association in 1995 and was the 1994 recipient of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Marshall Award.  He maintains his Peace Officer certification, and remains involved in association organizations having recently served as President for the Texas Police Officer Association and currently serving as President of the Gregg County Crime Stoppers.

A resident of Marshall, Keith has three sons and four grandchildren.  He is a graduate of Marshall High School, Panola Junior College, LeTourneau University and the FBI National Academy.

“Keith exemplifies selfless service.  His dedication and commitment to our Austin Bank family make him a go-to and trusted team player.  His responsibilities are varied and complex but he handles them well with a positive outlook and disposition making him a pleasure for all to interact with.”

John Williams, CEO/President, Jacksonville

“Working closely with Keith on numerous projects over the years, I appreciate his commitment to Austin Bank. The pride he takes in the work he does and his willingness to plan projects around bank holidays so as to not interfere with employees and customer service are a great help to the retail staff.”

Linda Douglas, SEVP/Chief Retail Officer, Jacksonville

“Keith gets things done.  Working with him on several projects he has taught me a lot.  He is the hardest worker I know and always puts the Austin family and their bank first.  He has become a good friend and a very good boss!”

Brenda Sharp, Advisory Director, Longview Greggton

“Keith has an incredibly strong work ethic and unwavering loyalty to Austin Bank.  He has a unique and uncanny ability to juggle a multitude of projects simultaneously without a single detail slipping through the cracks.  I have never met anyone who has as much pride in the quality and quantity of their work as Keith does.”

John Ory, SEVP/Chief Operations Officer, Longview Greggton

As a community bank, relationships are at the heart of our business.  Living, working and doing business in our communities – especially in the rural areas of East Texas – your reputation often precedes you, and everyone knows everyone.  Such is the case for this month’s Star, and we could not be more proud to have him as an ambassador for Austin Bank.  Congratulations to Andy Gardner, VP/Location President, in Garrison on his selection as the December Star.

Andy truly cares about Austin Bank and the success of the Garrison office.  Since coming to work for the Bank in 2010, his dedication, hard work, persistence and determination has continued to bring in new relationships and add customers to the banking family.  He is a master at networking and been known to bring in customers from up to 8 hours away, or exhibit the patience to work to gain a relationship for more than ten years.  His example is a driving force for the staff of the Garrison office and their region to strive to be the best and to help each other be successful.

Growing up in deep East Texas, Andy was raised in and around the agriculture industry.  A graduate of Lufkin High School and Stephen F. Austin State University, his knowledge of the businesses and community allows him to be a banker who understands the specific needs and wants of his customers.  A quote from a recent article in American Banker said, “While consumers may no longer need bankers to assist with transactions, no amount of digitization will replace the friendly face offering knowledgeable advice.”  This is Andy.  His heart (and hat) is as big as Texas, and he will drop what he is doing to help anyone in need.  With an easygoing demeanor and positive attitude, it is easy to see he truly cares about the well-being of Bank staff and customers.

Andy and his wife, Kristin, live in Garrison with their two children – Andi Beth and Cooper – five dogs, and a large number of cattle and chicken.  He is very involved with the community and serves with the Nacogodches Rotary Club, Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, and the Nacogdoches Area Go Texan Committee.  In addition, he volunteers many hours annually helping the Angelina and Nacogdoches County Fairs and local school agricultural programs.  In his spare time, he enjoys time with family, hunting, farming and promoting agricultural activities.

“Andy is great at building relationships with his customers – building value for himself and the Bank.  He takes the time to get to know the customer and provide sound advice.”

Jason Petersen, SEVP/Chief Lending Officer, Longview Oak Forest

“Andy has a heart of gold!  He seems to know just about every prospect in the agriculture industry, and always has a story to share.  He was the perfect hire for our rural market.”

Francis Spruiell, EVP/Regional President, Nacogdoches

“Andy is the heart and soul of the Garrison office.  His dedication to this community and determination to bring new customers to Garrison and develop real relationships is remarkable.”

Colin Powell, former Army General and National Security Advisor, said, “As a leader you set the tone for your entire team.”  You can say all of the right things yet still set the wrong tone, or you can be an authentic leader and actually do what you want your teammates to do.  It is this behavioral example, lived by the leader on a daily basis that fills employees with the confidence they are working with someone on whom they can depend.  This month’s Star was nominated by his teammates for this very reason.  It is our pleasure to introduce you to our May Star - Darrell Thompson, Retail Office Manager for our Troup location.

Darrell’s coworkers share that he comes into work every morning ready to start the day with a smile on his face, never complaining and determined to work harder than he worked the day before.  He is said to constantly set new goals for himself and the office and ensures those goals are met or surpassed each month.  “Darrell believes in Austin Bank and our products,” shares Lisa McCoy, SVP/eBanking Manager, Jacksonville.  “He looks to the needs of the customer and matches them with the best we have to offer.  He is always willing to share information and is not afraid to speak up.”  Darrell is a wonderful embodiment of the Austin Bank values and takes great pride in his job.
